THE SILHOUETTE AND CRYPTO CHALLENGE AND THE AUDACITY OF MY GENERATION
The internet has been awash with series of social media challenges in recent times, what has caught my attention is the current #silhouttechallenge that is trending on our media space.
The "silhouette challenge" is a popular new trend that involves an individual dancing erotically in a video with a red filter, disguising their bodies. Participants will often dance semi-nude or even completely naked because the filter makes them look like a shadow. The latest iteration of this challenge uses a remix of the Paul Anka classic “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” with Doja Cat's “Streets” to go from goody-goody to naughty-naughty at the beat drop.
This challenge has further raised questions especially from the older generation about the sanity of young Nigerians. I spoke with a professor of Sociology about the topic and her response was " Suleman, I'm disappointed in your generation, how can your generation make progress when your senses of reasoning are clouded by nudity, your brains are only activated for the wrong reasons".
My mentor's response actually pricked me to write this piece, and maybe give her a subtle reply and remind others in her shoes, that our generation is one with strong desire for; cruise when stressed, to play in the midst of serious business, to unwind and not get carried away by the problems of the society.
This challenge has further shown how audacious we can be. This audacity has positioned us to be active players in our society and from all sectors of life, young Nigerians are blazing the trail. Just as they have the audacity to dance erotically half naked in a dark red light, that's the same energy they put into their various works, hustles and endeavors.
Hey, do not get it twisted, I'm not supporting #silhouttechallenge neither am I a critic of it, the energy to judge individual actions is very lacking in my adrenaline. These people are not strippers, or vagabonds, they are professionals in their various fields, who after a long day, just wanna catch cruise.
We have Software Developers, Medical Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Crypto and Forex Traders, Nurses, Ride Hailing Providers, Affiliate Marketers, Entrepreneurs, E-commerce Specialists, Consultants, Accountants, etc. doing the challenge and others on social media.
I feel the older generation should focus more on fixing the country, since they want to be the leaders of today, tomorrow and forever. There is more work to be done, channel your energy in that direction. Nigeria is now the world's poverty capital, inflation keeps rising daily, no power, our roads are death traps, insecurity is consuming us, our universities are nothing but glorified Secondary schools, food security is zero, unemployment persist and the country is moving forward in all negative indices.
We have all of these problems, and right now, the biggest challenge of the older generation is Silhouette challenge and Cryptocurrency Challenge. They would do everything to clampdown on rescinding the growth witnessed in the cryptocurrency market because they lack the understanding of how digital coins work. Nigeria is the second biggest cryptocurrency market in the world after the United states. While clampdown on an industry that has lifted more young Nigerians out of poverty than the Nigerian Government?
Nigeria with over 200 million people has also been the biggest source of BTC trading volume in the continent. According to a recent report released by blockchain.com, Nigeria emerged one of the fastest-growing crypto markets globally.
More so, what the CBN and other stakeholders should have done is to promote regulatory discussions around digital currency because the rise of cryptocurrency is a clear sign that economies are preparing to adopt digital currency as complementary to fiat currency.
Recently, Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission announced it will regulate trade in certain digital currencies to provide protection for investors and to ensure transparency. The decision to regulate the sector highlights the country’s recognition of the potential of cryptocurrency and the recent move by the Central Bank to prevent Nigerian Banks from providing a platform for cryptocurrency traders to exchange coins for fiat currency is testament to the fact that there is no coordination between these two regulators.
As usual, with our indomitable spirit and zeal, just as we have been able to maneuver all negative trends they have entrenched in our country, we will always be alright by God's Grace, and the crypto challenge, just like the Silhouette challenge, will be a cruise.
Please you can send me email on what ever topical issue, you want me to write about.. and surely I will lend my voice.
