THE SILHOUETTE AND CRYPTO CHALLENGE AND THE AUDACITY OF MY GENERATION

Image
The internet has been awash  with series of social media challenges in recent times, what has caught my attention is the current #silhouttechallenge that is trending on our media space. The " silhouette challenge " is a popular new trend that involves an individual dancing erotically in a video with a red filter, disguising their bodies. Participants will often dance semi-nude or even completely naked because the filter makes them look like a shadow. The latest iteration of this challenge uses a remix of the Paul Anka classic “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” with Doja Cat's “Streets” to go from goody-goody to naughty-naughty at the beat drop. This challenge has further raised questions especially from the older generation about the sanity of young Nigerians. I spoke with a professor of Sociology about the topic and her response was " Suleman, I'm  disappointed in your generation, how can your generation make progress when your senses of reasoning are clouded by ...

The Menace of Herdsmen and the Hypocrisy of Government and Citizenry

Image
The subject of herdsmen and farmers clashes has been a recurring decimal in most parts of Nigeria. This crises origin is as old as Nigeria and yet, no Nigerian leader has been able to solve it because of lack of political will and the fear of being in the bad books of the players involved. The issue of farmers and herdsmen clashes intensified within the Plateau, during the erstwhile administration of President Goodluck Jonathan; with millions of Nigerians calling for his resignation in the period under review. I have chosen not to tag Fulanis to the  herdmen issue like most Nigerians, because Nigerians are quick to unjustly  stereotype ethnic nationalities and their Commerce. If there is a crises at Ladipo market in Lagos, the headlines would be a typical Naija headline " Igbo Traders Run Riots at Ladipo". In a market that has a yoruba as "Iyaloja". Let me not dive into the hypocrisy of Nigerians. Nigerians have decried the activities of herdsmen in recent times, ...

EXIT OF A COLOSSUS

Chief Alh. Mohammed Muazu Adogie: A legend has Gone home to rest. Grandpa as I fondly call you, you broke my heart in the wee hours of January 14th 2020. Trapped in my usual morning rituals of prayers, workouts and surfing the net, came with the sad news of your death. When I heard it, I felt a part of me was gone, I could not cry, neither did I summon the courage to write epistles about your death. To be candid, I was in shock for days. But few days after your timely demise, I'm still trying to pretend not to miss you. Your warmth was enough for me to get through a turgid winter. Your light saw me through the darkest moments of my life, your philanthropic gestures were second to non. The exemplary lifestyle you lived is not only worthy of emulation but worthy of curation.  Death, just as birth, is a natural phenomenon ordained by God, as humans, we lack the moral will to question why these things happen. We pray Almighty God grant you the best of paradise. When I look back at the ...

BUHARI'S FIGHT AGAINST POVERTY; A JAMBOREE

Image
President Muhammadu Buhari, has spent more money fighting poverty than any Nigerian leader from 1960 till date. Yet the impact of the president's Social Intervention programs such as the Conditional Cash Transfer to the vulnerable, NPower scheme, Covid survival fund and others leaves more to be desired. A person is said to be in a state of poverty if he or she earns less than one dollar and ninety cents a day, that's around nine hundred naira a day. According to the latest poverty index released by IMF, Nigeria has effectively retained its spot as the poverty capital of the world despite billions of dollars sunk into alleviating poverty by the PMB's Administration. According to Seattle, Washington — Nigeria, just exceeded India with the largest rate of people living in extreme poverty. In Nigeria, about 86.9 million live in severe poverty, which is about 50% of its entire population. While the nation is smaller both geographically and in terms of population, it is failing...
