EDO FIRST

Elections are conducted to choose leaders who will represent the people at different levels of government. In less than 48 hours, Edo state, the heart beat of Nigeria will go to the polls to elect a governor for the state. Tensions are high, party faithfuls have canvassed for their various candidates, mega rallies held and various civil society groups mobilized.

The various parties and the leading candidates, Governor Godwin Obaseki of the PDP and Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu of the APC have rolled out their manifestos and programs for the state. We have heard different campaign songs entertain us on air, no doubt, every stakeholder has participated in the whole process.

Edo people have heard your message, and come 19th September, Edolites will send out signal to the world how well they have decoded your message. As we match to the polls, let our voting reflect the mood of our dear state, we must vote our various candidates in an ambience devoid of rancor and violence.

As we vote, let us not be intimidated by the enemies of our state, who are bent on subverting the will of the people.  Edo people will prevail over all evil machinations on election day. Violence is not in our culture,  we are a peaceful people and will not harbour violence and this election will further reinforce our firm belief in upholding that principle.

Elections will come and go, politicians will come and go, parties will come and go, politicking is a transient adventure but our state will remain. We have produced heavy weight politicians like Kensington Momoh,  Dennis Osadebe, Samuel Ogbemudia, Alhaji Inu Umoru, Anthony Anenih and a host of others of blessed memory. These politicians blazed the trail during their era, today, they are all gone and Edo state remains. We have had political parties such as Unity party of Nigeria, Action group, NCNC dictating the politics of the state, today, they are all extinct. But Edo  hasn't.

If we orchestrate violence and distabalize Edo, posterity will judge us and place us on the wrong side of history. Even if we can afford to relocate to US, UK or Canada, we can never have a place as welcoming as the soft and warm hands of our dear state.

As we vote on Saturday, let us put Edo first, let us upheld and entrench every tenet of democracy known to mankind. It is our collective responsibility as Edolites to vote for any candidate that we believe can take us to the pedestal of development we have always envisaged for our dear state.

The two main political parties must reach out to their members to be law abiding and ensure we hold a violence free polls. No intrest is greater than the interest of our state.

God Bless Edo
God Bless Nigeria
